YOUTH SHORTS SCREENING AT SCRIBE
On Friday, November 9 at 7:00 pm Scribe Video Center presents an evening
of new short films by young people participating in media making
programs at Taller Puertoriqueno, Congresso de Latinos Unidos, Big
Picture Alliance, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Painted Bride Art Center,
Al-Bustan: Seeds of Culture, and Scribe Video Center. Travel across
genres from animation to documentary to narrative and join in a
conversation with some of Philadelphia's newest filmmakers and the
facilitators who work with them to find their voice through media.
Screening highlights include:
Restoring La Comunidad, a collaboration between Taller, Congresso, PMA
and Big Picture Alliance, uses key words from the students' poetry to
explore and interview people about community action. The words were then
made into art installations in the community to make people rethink the
meaning and significance of social change
Selections from the Painted Bride's Trading Tales, a Digital
Storytelling Project for teens to create dialogue on violence in
Philadelphia.
The Yellow Shoes is a love story between a boy and his new shoes from
WHYY's Learning Lab.
Mendeel produced by high school students in Al-Bustan: Seeds of Culture
after school program, explores two Palestinian Muslim girls' experiences
wearing the head scarf and their countering of stereotypical images of
Arabs/Muslims.
The Movement: The History of Philadelphia's Settlement Houses produced
by Scribe's 2007 Documentary History Project for Youth crew.
Researched, written, shot and edited by 9 youth filmmakers interview
local settlement house leaders and participants from The Lighthouse,
Lutheran Settlement House, Southwark House, Houston Center, Germantown
Settlement, Settlement Music School and Friends Neighborhood Guild share
their experiences and reflect on how their work has changed and evolved
over time.
