Letter from the Editor
It is a pleasure to release the second issue of YMR after a spectacular release party celebrating the first annual print journal at The Academy for Educational Development in March. Many thanks to our 70+ New York City based guests and supporters of YMR.
This issue introduces a multi-media approach to capturing the best practices and insights from educators in the youth media field. See our new “video” and “podcast” sections thanks to contributors Jones Franzel, Generation PRX and Tom Bailey, Community Television Network. Special thanks to our web designer, Stephen Hindman of Cult Hero Records and media intern Chelsey Hauge from The New School.
The articles in Volume 2: Issue 2 examine what youth media must do in order for the field to thrive, sustain and evolve. Contributors from the Tribeca Film Institute, McCormick Tribune Foundation, Youth Media Workshop, The New School, VOX Teen Communications, and Community Television Network suggest that the field:
• value the “youth” in youth media;
• develop youth media makers to be an effective and critical audience;
• support the variety of ways youth media orgs can network;
• encourage positive intergenerational relationships;
• avoid the perpetuation of archetypes in youth media videos; and,
• support youth when they disclose trauma or violence in their media pieces.
YMR will release four more electronic issues in 2008 on the 15th of June, August, October and December. Each issue will have six articles based on themes including hip hop and queer youth media, an academic peer-reviewed issue with research on the field, and politics and election issue leading up to the Presidential election.
We are always interested in new writers. Please see our writing guideline packet in the “write for YMR” section of the site or contact me to receive a word doc version. We’d love to work with you on producing a high quality article for publication in YMR.
If you would like an electronic version of the YMR print journal—that is free only this year—we have uploaded a PDF version onto the site. We encourage the wide dissemination of the PDF to be used as an important resource covering leading youth media pedagogies and practices. We look forward to your subscription for next year’s print journal.
Warmly,
Ingrid Hu Dahl
